Background of the Study

Excessive alcohol consumption is a well-documented risk factor for liver diseases, including alcoholic liver disease (ALD), cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). The liver plays a critical role in metabolizing alcohol, but prolonged alcohol intake can lead to liver inflammation, fibrosis, and eventual liver failure (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024). Globally, alcohol-related liver diseases contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality, especially in regions where alcohol consumption is prevalent.

In Nigeria, while alcohol use varies by region due to cultural and religious factors, there is growing concern about the rising incidence of alcohol-related liver disease, particularly in states like Sokoto (Aliyu & Garba, 2024). Despite religious restrictions on alcohol consumption in Sokoto State, studies suggest that underground alcohol markets and unregulated consumption contribute to liver disease burden (Usman et al., 2024). However, there is limited empirical research assessing the direct relationship between alcohol intake patterns and liver disease prevalence in Sokoto State. This study aims to bridge this gap by evaluating alcohol consumption trends and their impact on liver disease prevalence.

Statement of the Problem

Liver disease is a growing public health challenge in Nigeria, yet there is limited regional data on the extent to which alcohol consumption contributes to its prevalence (NCDC, 2024). In Sokoto State, where alcohol use is officially restricted but still consumed illicitly, the actual burden of alcohol-induced liver disease remains unclear. Additionally, many cases of liver disease go undiagnosed or are diagnosed at late stages due to limited healthcare access and awareness (Ogunleye et al., 2024).

This study seeks to examine the relationship between alcohol consumption patterns and liver disease prevalence in Sokoto State, providing evidence-based recommendations for liver disease prevention and public health policy adjustments.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the prevalence of liver disease in Sokoto State.

2. To examine alcohol consumption patterns and their correlation with liver disease.

3. To evaluate awareness and preventive measures related to alcohol-induced liver disease.

Research Questions

1. What is the prevalence of liver disease in Sokoto State?

2. How does alcohol consumption influence liver disease occurrence?

3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce alcohol-induced liver disease?

Research Hypotheses

1. There is a significant relationship between alcohol consumption and liver disease prevalence in Sokoto State.

2. High alcohol intake increases the risk of developing liver disease.

3. Improved awareness and public health interventions can reduce alcohol-related liver diseases.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on alcohol consumption trends and liver disease cases in Sokoto State, using hospital records, surveys, and public health data. Limitations may include underreporting of alcohol consumption due to social stigma and difficulty in diagnosing early-stage liver disease.

Definitions of Terms

• Alcohol Consumption – The intake of alcoholic beverages, measured in frequency and quantity.

• Liver Disease – A broad category of conditions affecting liver function, including cirrhosis and hepatitis.

• Alcoholic Liver Disease (ALD) – Liver damage caused specifically by excessive alcohol consumption.
